hola_melanippe: (Spear of Amazonia)
'Implied slavery' has nothing to do with my promotion to Optio that I neglected to note here - it's been so busy! Nor with my acceptance into the Collegio as an acolyte (although every Amazon is a sort of lay priestess anyway, isn't she). It rather has to do with himations. Veils and pallas. Over-clothing, whatever name you might wish to use.

The priestesses, unsurprisingly, wear veils, thin draperies over the head and sometimes over the face. It is a symbol of the mysteries they encounter, and their separateness from the material world. However, finding decently-made veils, never mind proper wrappings, is another matter. The High Priestess gave me some notes, one of which was for a place called 'Black Rose'. After the frustration of looking through a slow-loading vendor of togas and such that I did not find... suitable... I returned to Black Rose at least in hopes of a head-drapery for formal occasions. I have my wolfskin mantle, a gift from one of the Legio brethren, to keep the chill off my shoulders at least.

Veils. Face-veils. Veils to wear while one's body is displayed like on a butcher's table, sectioned up into gobbets of lustful desire while the face is hidden away, being of no importance to male lust. Women in chains, women in ropes, women whose 'clothing' was intended to sell wares and hide personalities. Parodies of Amazons, wearing 'armour' that consisted of a few scraps of metal useless for protection while the most vulnerable areas are exposed - no, displayed.

My blood was boiling by the time I finished looking. I would have set fire to the place had I a torch at hand.

I have finally been able to visit the sisters at the Embassy of the Feminine Empire of Aristasia. I had met them when some of the 'pettes' had been visiting Roma, during the big anniversary festivals and the opening of Transtiberum, although I had heard of Aristasia beforehand, and had spoken briefly to... their style of address is 'Miss Sushuri Madonna', title then given name then family name, unlike the Romans I am around so often.

Several of the sisters are having problems with their aetheric engines, so I volunteered to take some pictures before I had to let Klaus reacquire our spirit (grumble):

The Aristasian adelphe dancing )

Our Princess seems to be well-taken with our sisters from distant lands; one of my other Themiscyran sisters was even attending the party in a reincarnate form! Such a pleasant surprise! Unfortunately, I did not get a picture of her in her party clothes.

I made a suggestion to Miss Cecile, one of the elder-sisters in this realm, I believe; since we are of like minds, and Princess Diana and Kara/Karrie both have fallen in with the White Roses most happily, we might consider sharing the expense of a hestia - what the Aristasians call, most sensibly, a homeland of their own. Our own. We could split an island stylistically, but not geographically, and have plenty of room for all of us... and make it financially easier to become a reality in this Second Life. I must send a messenger to Diana with the thought.

If only 17 adelphe could manage... what, L$26,500 each...? Yes, it's a lot, but it's a goal to set....

But first, a few stelae - this first one is from my usual sandbox, next to the park in Hypatia. Although it is not in the Amazon land of Arietas itself, it's still labelled as the 'Amazon Sandbox' and has been unoccupied every time I've needed it. I had bought some fire dances from , and since the furniture it came with is rather expansive, I needed room to open things up.

While there, I noticed the pegasus beds I'd found in the sandbox once (I think I shared them quite a while ago, out of disbelief) up on the bluff overlooking the area:

Still there
Still there

The horribly tacky pegasus beds are, as it turns out, from a nearby sex-furniture shop. Very classical, very Amazonian. *sigh* (Actually, they're in Tritonis, but it's right next to Arietas and the park.)

Aside from the sheer size, would anybody ever actually buy something like this?? They're anatomically... evocative. Who would want giant stallion parts hanging over their heads when they lie down?

Practice Friday was a little different - I got to have company in my inactivity (it is so frustrating):

Spectators (1)
Spectators (1)

Dudeacious Oxide, Tonina, Jo and me in the stands at the practice field.
Spectators (2)
Spectators (2)

The 'boys' have at it while we watch and converse.

However, Saturday I found a way I can fight (not very well yet) that does not depend on my motivating spirit's 'difference engine' - that is the term Klaus uses - or my speed. I did not take pictures myself, but others did, including my host, Hotspur O'Toole. You can see me in a few of the pictures, and my name on the board. Colonel Exrex Somme coached adelphe Annechen and I, and she did very well. I... have a lot more practice to do.

Exrex (I must ask him about his name some time) is apparently with Legio XX, and asked me to show him around Roma some time. Good practice for me! I have all the notes from Præfectus Torin's file for Procurators that I can use as a guide - and it will help me answer questions better.

I want to try the ice skating, too.

This is from the gardens around the temples, looking north. You can see easily our new Legio fortress; to the right but hidden by the tree there's a beautiful pharos and harbour for the Legio's naval vessels.

Sorry for the hexa-plants....

I will be so glad when I can have myself to myself again, and Klaus is his own man. He is tired of being called 'Miss Karas', too. November 4th is not close enough. I couldn't even finish this note without being interrupted!

There are stelae I haven't properly shared yet, and news. You can see me helping my brother's... what is the right word, polemarchos? Taxiarchos? Those are military terms, they are not quite right. Boithos? Archon, perhaps. Anyway, the adelphe's name is Annechen, and I went with her to buy her house. They have a little train at this place called 'Tin Teddy'. I'm starting to be very fond of the little trains, they amuse me.

I didn't get pictures of going to Oktoberfest with adelphe Alison - she's one of Klaus's neighbours. I was looking around the great house in Carntaigh in Caledon as a party was concluding, and found her just leaving. The Oktoberfest was very quiet for such a well-publicised event, but I found Greek dances there! Also a polka, which I heard made Annechen very happy. She likes things from her home here, but — who doesn't?

Speaking of which, I was visiting Kara's property - before she built her lovely house - and wandered around the island. I found Diana's Paradise Island annex! See me relaxing next to her pool? We finally had some time together, the epikleros and I, and she told me her plans for us in this realm. It might be a long time coming, but she has vision a princess should have for her people.

Ah, what else.... I finally got some pictures of myself in my own armour, not just the Roman uniform. I had to be rescued by the Caledonian adelphe Alexx when a strange sister speaking only Spanish showed up in the Consulate. I heard the princess showed up at Klaus's party, I thought that was nice (it would have been nicer if I'd been there to greet her). I showed a real adelphe who guards the forest around some lands in Winterfell. She said she was an Amazon, although I did not recognise her; perhaps she is from one of the mortal tribes I have not encountered.

And then there's this holy-day this past Wednesday, a cross-quarter to the equinox and solstice, where apparently you either dress up unusually, get drunk, or have reverent bonfire rituals. Or sometimes all three. Klaus 'wore' me as a costume to one of his events! And dressed as some character from an entertainment, to boot. At least she was a warrior. But then it got very strange, because I was there, but so was he, and my motivating spirit seemed to be speaking through and over both of us. At one point I faded out entirely, like I was asleep, and woke again to find my yellow costume ripped and somewhat bloody across the front, as if I had been attacked - but no wounds. And my pnevma was still dominant. It felt very strange, and I still don't know what actually happened.

And the news: Roma, where I am a member of their Legio until my sisters gather in enough numbers here, has expanded its lands! The training grounds are moving to the very northern coast of the new land; there will be a large harbour just for the classis - I saw three ships docked. There is a large mountain, taller than the dwelling of Haestphestus in the suburba I think, and much free water through the land I could see quickly. Some of my Legio sisters led me there, and I found they have been gifted with the gods with flight as I have! That was as much of a surprise as the new lands. I must tell my new friend Telemachus - my brother has seen him in Caledon as a warrior of repute, but I met him at the sacrifice in honour of the Getae's change in status.

It's been weeks since the Legio encampment and I still haven't written it up. At least I got the stelae shared out with my... what's the Latin term, sorors?

I arrived late to the opening of the camp on Friday, August 17th. The Baron had been wandering around the Caledon Library, so when my sorors called me to join them, I had to rush him off so I could get changed into my uniform. The camp was so busy when I got there! New Amazons, Parisii, and some of the Legio regulars whom I hadn't met, including Francus, whose work the encampment largely was. One of the apparent locals amused me - she danced, and danced... one of my sisters even snapped at her to stop, but all she did was get dressed more appropriately for the camp (never pausing in the meantime).

I stayed up as late as I could, then lay down in one of the tents to sleep. When I got up, it was very very quiet, and largely remained that way for what seemed to me to be the majority of the weekends. I found out that part of the reason was that the gods had become displeased with this world, and had suffered afflictions upon it, causing the mere mortals to be unable to move about freely and suchlike. I didn't even see any Parisii anywhere within reach of my smaller map. It was a little lonely while I was the only one there. I couldn't even bring Prokris out to play (I didn't dare bring Oualos, he's too naughty with his determined wandering off) because of the permissions on the site.

Later that day, as the sun was setting, adelphe Spaciva called me to come stomp grapes with her. I was reluctant to abandon the camp, but it had been too quiet for me, so I followed her beacon and found myself stomping grapes in a large vat with a man and a sister wearing identification of a goddess. She was, however, not one of the goddesses I recognise on sight. I finally met one of the Getae - their druid, who was wearing Roman robes and title, stomped grapes in the next vat over. We stomped for a while, then hurried off uphill to a ceremony to Hæsphestus, but they called him 'Vulcan'. The volcano which looms over the practice fields loomed even closer this time, and rumbled and spat fireballs at us. After the ritual, there was feasting and dancing, but I went back to the camp for a while.

Oh, I meant to get this written down sooner - I'm forgetting things, like exactly when the ritual to Artemis Diana took place exactly; and the Roman trivia game afterwards (I had some answers correct, but was too slow - only got credit for two). The winner was a Proconsul and generously shared his prize with everybody present. Appropriate to the occasion, I donated it to the goddess and her priesthood, even if they call her by a funny name.

And when everybody suddenly showed up at the camp, started playing with our horses, and ended up not only giving Francus his own steed but making a parade through the streets of Paris to the Arc d'Triomphe and back. All Amazons, except for Francus!

Sunday, I'm sure about - Francus and some of the others put out a call for everyone possible to show up, and we skirmished. Amazons and the lone Getae warrior versus the mixed bag of regulars, classiari and equites. I found I cannot fight adequately, which made me frustrated, sad and annoyed altogether. I'm just not fast enough, I can't see my opponents' attacks. I finally sheathed my sword and went off to look at the ranch which provided warhorses my sisters ride, as my handsome riding horse Hecate seems quite insubstantial compared to these muscular beasts of theirs. There's something to be said of a horse bred for a task, and as a benefit, the Baron can use the horse as his saddle horse - he's a very large man, they will match in scale.

(Baron Klaus eventually picked out a Percheron, all dapple-grey and huge; it will be like riding that Trojan Horse in the histories. He's a stallion, and doesn't have a name yet.)

The camp had emptied out while I was gone; not long after that, Francus closed the camp and took down his part of the furnishings. He hardly left his new horse's back, incidentally, since he first mounted. I sat around on either Hecate or my pegasus as well as he worked. Finally, the land was bare and we left for Roma, where we wandered around the market talking to our comrades and friends. It was a relief to get out of that armour, I can tell you, having been in it almost continuously for three days! I didn't even bother putting sandals back on - my feet are tough, and the market area is well-paved. I met a pair of children, incredibly energetic, who were related to the Queen of the Getae somehow. I came up to her talking to Francus, but she had to leave before I could really talk to her. The children ran around and around; they said their father was a god, but didn't say who; the girl admired my Bracelets of Submission. They started begging for wine, but Francus was quite stern with them. They also suggested I should go to the Baths with him! Strange ideas they came up with.

Finally I left for a well-deserved rest. It was quite an event. :)

The images of the encampment (and grape-stomping) are here.

The Legio XIII are holding a re-enactment camp in Paris 1900, apparently on the grounds of the Moulin Rouge (although it seems ever so spacious).

I didn't get to spend much time there today, but I hope to have more pictures before the camp is struck. At least, while I'm not being re-killed some more.

Here's the first two:

I didn't get any, unfortunately, when everybody decided to become a mounted unit and there were horses kicking up dust everywhere *coughcough*.

Quoting the Præfectus of the Roma Legio XIII:

Promotions in Auxiliary Amazon unit

Melanippe Karas - Immunus

IMMUNES AND PRINCIPALES (5 of each): Have the duty to teach the recruits how to behave in the Legio, how to fit their armor, and how to fight using the combat system. They are directly in charge of the new recruits and must be obeyed by by them at all times. They must correct the behavior of members who are ignoring or disobeying the conduct rules. They must report all incidents (good or bad) to the upper ranks. They monitor the progress of the recruits and their attendance at training sessions.

Not anything to do with the land Aquaman has ruled over, or that of Lori Lemaris, but instead the land next to Hypatia Park. An unsettling thing happened to me earlier while I was trying to find the Amazon Sandbox, which has been very quiet the few times I've been by, so I could do some body modification in modest privacy (go ahead, laugh if you want to).

I checked the location on the map, took off flying, and watched my progress on the big map to see if I could navigate at the same time (I could). I watched my dot approach the Tritonis Mall, since I believed the sandbox to be in the crook of the bay between it and the park boundaries... overfly the mall, corrected to my right... keep going over the mall... erm... over the land boundaries and keep going... what?

I closed the map to find myself flying in limbo, and making darn good progress at it. I was able to pivot my camera around without even using the usual controls, and got a rather nice photo of me - just as I got logged out.

Freak occurrance, right? Servers having problems, etc.etc.etc.

Logged in. World splashed with grey paint for rather longer than normal. Tried again. Swoosh, off into limbo.

OK, this time I'll walk. I got to the edge of the parkland, right by the metal sea-serpent. Map looks normal. Mini-map shows... a blank area. Hmmm. I strode forward boldly, fell off a sea cliff that wasn't there before onto a sandy bottom, kept walking no matter what keys were pressed... sank through the sandy bottom and started falling down away from my camera, still striding confidently... getting smaller and smaller and....

I logged me off that time. Creepy. Very creepy.

I wonder where I'll be when I try again.

To all my sister Amazons, welcome. If you have need of me, leave a virtual enscription here and I shall respond as soon as I might.

To my sisters of the Roman Amazons as well as my sisters-in-soul in the Justice League, ave and greetings.

Meanwhile, I indulge myself with sharing a few images from this strange land I find myself exploring:
I've joined the Legion XIII Auxiliary (Amazons), and will share an image of myself in kit - it's quite a handsome uniform with a spectacularly-emblazoned shield. I also must show you Prokris, if I can get her to hold still long enough!
